Who does the Engineers Ireland CPD policy apply to?
Engineers Ireland says its CPD policy applies to all non-student members, except members who are unable to meet the requirement for a valid exemption reason.
The policy lists examples including retirement, maternity leave, parental leave, sabbatical leave, long-term illness, carer's leave and unemployment.
The 35-hour figure should be presented as an Engineers Ireland requirement. Engineers who are not members, or who have a separate professional obligation, should check the rules that actually govern their status.
How much CPD do Engineers Ireland members need?
The Engineers Ireland policy says members should undertake a minimum of 35 hours CPD per annum to maintain and develop professional knowledge, skills and expertise.
The CPD cycle runs from 1 January to 31 December. Before the end of each cycle, members must submit a compliance and ethics declaration.
Engineers Ireland says a declaration can be submitted once the member has completed 35 hours, where the member works for a CPD Accredited Employer and has uploaded the employer CPD record, or where a valid exemption applies.
What counts as CPD for Engineers Ireland?
The policy deliberately uses a broad model. Engineers Ireland lists work-based learning, courses and self-directed learning among the types of activities that can count, provided the member benefits from the activity and it helps meet learning goals.
This means CPD is not limited to attending formal classroom courses. The relevance and benefit of the learning matter.
Engineers Ireland expressly states that CPD activities do not have to be provided or accredited by Engineers Ireland.
How should Engineers Ireland members record CPD?
Engineers Ireland provides its own CPD recording area for members. Its guidance allows supporting verification to be attached to an activity, such as a certificate of attendance or achievement or a link to a relevant journal article.
If a member already records CPD with another professional body, Engineers Ireland says that record can be added as an individual CPD activity and attached for verification purposes. Members working for an Engineers Ireland CPD Accredited Employer can upload a single document detailing their CPD activities with that employer as proof of meeting the 35-hour requirement.
Does Engineers Ireland CPD have to be accredited?
No. Engineers Ireland's current policy says CPD activities do not have to be provided or accredited by Engineers Ireland.
A CPD Ireland accreditation demonstrates that a course has been independently reviewed against the CPD Ireland Accreditation Standard. It may provide useful evidence of course quality, approved learning time and completion, but the individual Engineers Ireland member remains responsible for deciding whether the activity is relevant to their professional development and for meeting Engineers Ireland's own policy.
